Common Questions
A scaffold design is the formal engineering process that ensures a scaffold structure is safe, stable, and compliant before it is built. Under the Work at Height Regulations 2005, scaffold structures that are not standard configurations must be supported by structural calculations to prove stability.
Designers also have duties under the CDM Regulations 2015 to eliminate, reduce, or control risks through a design risk assessment. Scaffold design must therefore:
- Include detailed drawings and calculations where required
- Be developed in line with NASC guidance (TG20, SG4, etc.)
- Meet British Standards and Temporary Works procedures
- Be checked at the appropriate level (Cat 2 or Cat 3) where legislation or client requirements demand
This process ensures the scaffold is not just technically robust but also legally compliant, helping duty holders meet their obligations.
For common scaffolds, standardised compliance sheets (such as those set out in NASC TG20) can be used to demonstrate that a scaffold is safe without bespoke engineering. These cover typical structures like independent tied scaffolds, towers, or birdcages within defined limits.
However, when the scaffold falls outside of these parameters, a bespoke design is required. Examples include:
- Unusual loading or geometry
- Complex façades or bridges
- Temporary roofs
- Public protection or façade retention systems
- Any situation not fully covered by TG20 compliance sheets
In these cases, bespoke scaffold design provides the necessary calculations, drawings, and risk assessment to prove the scaffold can be built safely and in compliance with the Work at Height Regulations and Temporary Works procedures.
Yes. We offer third-party checks (including Cat 3) to ensure designs are safe and fit for purpose. Our feedback is clear and practical, helping identify issues early so projects can proceed without unnecessary risk.
Absolutely. We provide pre-construction workshops and advice during tendering. This helps contractors price works accurately, scope jobs effectively, and gain a competitive edge when bidding.
We design a wide range of scaffolds, including (but not limited to):
- Access scaffolds
- Temporary roofs
- Bridges and walkways
- Façade retention systems
- Temporary propping & shoring
- Emergency works and encapsulations
Yes. For complex jobs, we create 3D models and visualisations. These are useful for explaining solutions to clients and site teams, winning tenders, and avoiding miscommunication during delivery.
Our team offers rapid-response designs for emergency works, such as unexpected site conditions or safety concerns. Being adaptable and contractor-focused, we can step in quickly when projects demand urgent engineering input.
We’re a small, dynamic group of engineers with both contracting and consultancy backgrounds. That means:
- Practical, buildable designs rooted in site experience
- Reliable turnaround times
- Clear, plain advice
- A personable team who care about your success as much as our own
